Smart Money Concepts, Explained
SMC is a framework for reading market structure through liquidity. It gives traders a shared vocabulary for structure, sweeps and imbalance. It is a way to analyse the market, not a way to predict it.
What are Smart Money Concepts?
Smart Money Concepts (SMC) is an analysis framework for reading market structure through liquidity. It describes price as moving between pools of resting orders, using ideas such as break of structure, change of character, liquidity sweeps, order blocks and fair value gaps.
The name suggests that a group of informed participants steers the market. In practice, SMC is best understood as a vocabulary and a framework: a consistent way to describe where price has been, where orders are likely to be resting, and what has changed.
SMC is not a prediction system. It does not guarantee that any level will hold, any sweep will reverse, or any pattern will play out. It organises observation so a trader can define scenarios, entries and invalidation points.
Market structure: BOS and CHoCH
Market structure is the sequence of swing highs and swing lows. An uptrend is a series of higher highs (HH) and higher lows (HL); a downtrend is a series of lower highs (LH) and lower lows (LL).
Break of Structure (BOS) happens when price breaks the previous swing in the direction of the prevailing trend, for example a new higher high in an uptrend. It signals continuation.
Change of Character (CHoCH) is the first break against the prevailing trend, such as price closing below the most recent higher low. It signals that the structure may be changing, not that it has reversed.
Internal vs. external structure. External structure is the larger swing range that defines the broader trend. Internal structure is the smaller swings inside that range. A CHoCH on internal structure does not necessarily change the external trend.
| Structure | What it describes |
|---|---|
| HH + HL | Uptrend: higher highs and higher lows |
| LH + LL | Downtrend: lower highs and lower lows |
| BOS | Trend continuation: swing broken in trend direction |
| CHoCH | Possible change: first break against the trend |
| Internal vs external | Small swings inside a larger range vs the larger range itself |
Core SMC concepts
- Liquidity
- Resting orders, especially stop orders, clustered around obvious levels such as equal highs, equal lows and prior swing points. Price is often attracted to these areas because that is where orders can be filled.
- Liquidity sweep
- Price briefly trades through a liquidity pool, triggers the orders resting there, then returns. Also called a stop run or liquidity grab. A sweep describes what happened; it does not tell you whether price will continue or reverse.
- Order block
- The last opposing candle before a strong move, treated as a zone where significant orders may have been placed. Whether it holds depends on context.
- Fair value gap (FVG)
- A three-candle pattern in which the first candle's range and the third candle's range do not overlap, leaving an imbalance. Price sometimes returns to fill part of it.
- Displacement
- A strong, impulsive move with large candle bodies and little retracement, often leaving fair value gaps. It suggests urgency and is used to qualify a structure break.
- Premium / discount
- A trading range is divided at its 50% level. Above is premium (relatively expensive), below is discount (relatively cheap). Frameworks often prefer buying in discount and selling in premium.

How SMC is used as an analysis framework
- Define the higher-timeframe structureIs the external structure bullish, bearish or ranging? Mark the key swing highs and lows.
- Mark liquidityIdentify equal highs and lows, prior day, week or range extremes where orders likely rest.
- Wait for a reactionWatch whether price sweeps liquidity, displaces away and breaks internal structure.
- Locate a zoneUse an order block or fair value gap, ideally in discount for longs or premium for shorts.
- Define riskSet invalidation beyond the structure that would prove the idea wrong, and size the position accordingly.
How SMC connects to orderflow and liquidity
SMC and liquidity
SMC is fundamentally a liquidity framework. Sweeps, equal highs and lows and order blocks are all attempts to describe where orders rest and how price interacts with them.
SMC and orderflow
Orderflow can test SMC ideas. Did a sweep occur on heavy aggressive volume that was then absorbed? Did a CHoCH come with real CVD expansion or without it?
SMC and derivatives data
Open interest and liquidation levels indicate where leveraged positions and forced orders might add liquidity to a sweep.
Limits. SMC patterns are subjective: two analysts can mark different swings and different order blocks on the same chart. Treat zones as areas of interest, backtest your rules, and never assume a level will hold.
Smart Money Concepts in VELANTHOR
VELANTHOR includes smart money concepts and market structure analysis within the same workspace as orderflow, CVD, open interest and liquidation data. That makes it possible to check a structural idea against participation and aggression instead of relying on the pattern alone.

Frequently asked questions
What are Smart Money Concepts (SMC)?
SMC is an analysis framework that interprets price through market structure and liquidity, using concepts such as BOS, CHoCH, liquidity sweeps, order blocks and fair value gaps.
What is the difference between BOS and CHoCH?
A BOS is a break of the previous swing in the direction of the trend and suggests continuation. A CHoCH is the first break against the prevailing trend and suggests the structure may be changing.
What is a liquidity sweep?
A liquidity sweep is when price briefly moves beyond a level where many orders rest, such as equal highs, triggers them, and then moves back. It describes an event, not a guaranteed reversal.
What is an order block?
An order block is the last opposing candle before a strong move. It is treated as a zone where large orders may have been placed, and traders watch it for reactions.
What is a fair value gap?
A fair value gap is an imbalance formed when the first and third candles of a three-candle sequence do not overlap, leaving a gap in the middle candle's range.
What is premium and discount?
A range is divided at 50%. Prices above are premium and prices below are discount. The idea is to seek long setups in discount and short setups in premium.
Can SMC predict price?
No. SMC is an analysis framework that helps describe market behaviour and plan scenarios. It cannot guarantee future price movement.
